quikydink

upon reviewing that note, "do you have a thesis written about the idea of modernist neighborhoods contributing to tree culture?" i've been writing that thesis all day in my head, though i'd forgotten what they wrote.

all falls apart

wrote to someone i found on line, about the maps. they run a premium architecture site. they replied, in a friendly way! ... but clearly befuddled. "I'm not sure I understand it just yet. Is this work in progress or do you have a thesis written about the idea of modernist neighborhoods contributing to tree culture? I am glad you are enjoying the postings, I wish every day was like the day at Taliesin!"

then i went to the maps, and they were broken. it's back to the drawing board.

to view all the tempe superblocks (note plural) index maps, click the tempe superblocks link at the end of the Labels list (below this post). to view a map specific to one superblock, click the superblock number (tempe superblock 1, etc.) in the labels list below the superblocks map containing that block. to view block maps and multiblock maps, find the links below the superblock map (note singular) for that area. aspect maps are indexed from block maps. blocks and multiblocks are numbered on the superblock maps. the listing for a block or multiblock is, for example, block 1-1, where the first number is the superblock number and the second is the block or multiblock number. aspects record field observations specific to a block. there are also multiblocks, which are indexed from superblock maps, like some blocks, but which contain blocks, so some blocks are indexed from superblock maps, and some from multiblock maps, the latter being indexed from superblock maps.

what it is

maps, on which can be recorded information, especially about urban forestry, urban agriculture, very green living, localized economies, and urbanism, in a framework for studying places.

a prototype for a web2.0 project. contact the blog (see profile info), describe your project, and i'll include it. see the longer and more dificult intro. but also note the web development aspect, a crowd-sourced version.

business planning notes, a kind of prospectus.

more about structuring a company

The earlier posts where I discuss the problem of acquiring partners - organizing a business - are pretty heavy going, not because of my ponderous style, though there is that, but because they reek of wishful thinking. Here is a little history of my thoughts since writing those posts: "Maybe I shouldn't write about my dream of starting a business. Maybe I'm supposed to just do it. But that isn't right. I'm supposed to do something, but I'm also supposed to organize a company, to do more. I want to organize a business. I want to employ people.

"I have zero funds to pay employees. I'm trying out ways to raise funds by making and selling things with limited, low cost resources, but the prospects, based on my experience with this, including significant action - if only in the recent past -, suggests results may be some time in coming. It's really a form of diversification if I also pursue the notion of acquiring partners.

"What I need to do is describe my plans in a way that will make sense to investors. This is probably somewhat complicated by the fact that I am deeply interested in the concept of equity participation - for the work force, and all of it, that builds the product line. There are, therefore, two kinds of equity involved: financial and sweat.

"I've been trying to work out what this means. My previous efforts have deteriorated into various kinds of muddled writing, but I think I may see, now, taking a more simplified approach, more focused on the actual, real life purpose, how it goes together.

"The purpose is compensating people to work on and execute a set of plans. The plan is to distribute an appropriate share of earnings, at the end of one year, to each person who contributed toward generating them - while at the same time maintaining majority ownership in the hands of selected persons for a fairly extended period of time.

"If we think about this, the amount of earnings we expect to generate in the first year is what limits the number of compensated hours we can schedule during that year.

"During subsequent years, we need to factor in compensation which early participants should receive from current revenues, even if they aren't still active in the work. Their early work is the foundation upon which later work proceeds. We need a way to balance the value of the earlier work and that of the ongoing work in calculating the distribution of earnings. Over time, though, the share allotted to early participants who have not been active in the work of the company should be diluted.

"Distribution of shares seems ideal for managing this balancing act. I don't have a complete picture of how that's done - or of how the requisite corporate structure is set up. All I can do is try to map out a process of work, and show, by describing it that way, how it might create earnings.

"In the early stages, attention will be focused on some highly technical matters - organizing the entity, developing key technologies for production. This is properly sweat equity work. It is substantially work in the spoken and written word, and in media, all of which are well suited to nature of sweat equity participation: the participants can make very substantial contributions with a limited commitment of time. Working substantially via correspondence, the team can accomplish a lot while each member remains free to engage fully in diverse other pursuits.

"At the same time, some of my revenue generating angles are reaching a certain stage of development which might give them the quality of being able to "scale up." They are, perhaps, ready to be described, in the sense that is required to perhaps qualify them as components of an investment vehicle. I described something along those lines in the first post on this blog - the yard - and palm power (but just click the "about" link in Labels ... or, click here ... and then scroll down), but those musings largely don't apply to the goal of generating earnings in the first year. I am preparing to start a blog which will describe some more relevant plans for that very initial stage."

how the map works

to access the map of the city of Tempe, first, review the TempeSuperblock maps. these organize large areas of the city into a series of numbered blocks.

at the bottom of each post is a list of labels. these are links that produce a view of the blog including only posts bearing a particular label.

clicking the label "tempesuperblocks" will display all the Tempe superblock maps.

at the bottom of each superblocks post look for labels. if you want to look in more detail at one of the superblocks, look for the label for that superblock, for example, look for a label under the superblocks1-9 post for superblock 1. This will bring up a map with numbered blocks (in some cases, there will be "multiblocks") within superblock 1 and all the posts specific to the blocks and multiblocks identified in that superblock map.

block maps are very detailed - or greatly enlarged - views of single blocks. these can in turn be subdivided into what i'm calling aspects. an aspect can be documented using field observations, for example, photos, notes, data sets. linking to an aspect, via the labels attached to its home post, will display all the posted field observations and research results for that aspect.

multiblocks are subdivided into blocks using the same system with the labels, and then those blocks are subdivided into aspects.

to list observation in this system, users will need to contact me, and describe their data/content, so that i can work out how to incorporate it. see my profile.

for even more about the system, use the about label, below.

sniffer

Sniffer automatically logs air quality readings, for example, in the home, or in the garden. Using the on line interface, users can compare their readings with other readings locally, and perhaps identify specific pollution source by identifying neighborhood emissions plumes.

the entrepreneurial process?

A considerable financial investment will surely be required to implement the plans outlined in The Yard and Palm Power.

Investors are unlikely to consider such a speculative program.

Taking an incremental approach to the problem of creating a company, I am thinking about less resource intensive product development projects.

I would like to develop the process for counting the trees in a city into a web2.0 product that will allow the public to count things on a map. Users can provide information about the trees - and other objects - around and including their homes, offices, etc. These user contributed observations can then be represented as overlays on the maps constructed by users to their own specifications.

I've designed two kinds of baskets for gardeners - and storage - and two kinds of composters for home use, which I hope to patent and license for production. I want to get into the wooden utensil business.

I'm trying to figure out how to distribute ownership of such a venture. Since one goal is to raise capital for these and future ventures, the investors will require some form of ownership stake. I would also like to distribute some shares to each and every person who participates in the development of the company, including at this early stage.

I'm trying to figure out how this would work. It may be that, some years down the road, the development work done will support a million workers around the world. What would be appropriate compensation for early stage involvement in something like that? (It presumably depends on nature of the role played by that individual.) Also, as new participants join the company, how are shares distributed to them? Presumably, an early stage participant will receive a larger portion of any year's dividend, except in as much as they are not actively involved in the ongoing development process for an extended period, in which case their stake should gradually be diluted by the accumulating shares distributed to newer participants.

palm power!

Proposed: use this and other urban landscape waste to fuel a hydrogen generating station.

Super clean: burn only quality wood: clean, dry palm wood, "twig" fuel, bamboo, properly prepared cord wood (kindling). Burns hot and fast with little emissions.

Promote hydrogen as a cooking fuel.

Promote clean, high-efficiency wood heat. Install high-efficiency fireplaces in existing homes.

Market wood from urban forests throughout the region to the new Cellulosic Waste Ethanol industry.

Promote alcohol as cooking and home heating fuel. Develop and market highly engineered ultra convenient alcohol stoves.

tempe superblocks 9-11

You can kind of sense how many trees are on this map, how many landscapers might be employed maintaining them.

how many trees are there in Tempe?

the yard

By posting on this blog I hope to organize an urban forestry program, in Tempe and for the world.

The Yard will be where we collect forest products from the Tempe Forest.Timbers, fruit, trash.

A precision milling operation and an internet based inventory and design system will allow local architects to build using timbers from the urban forest.

A fuels division will process scrap and trash (branches, twigs) into highly aerated, clean burning fuels for home heating, cooking, kiln firing, electical generation, etc.

Chipping and composting operations will produce ecologically packaged products for gardening and landscaping.

A foodstuffs and materials division will harvest, process, pack, and market agricultural products from local forests.

A home services division will assist homeowners and businesses with planning, architectural innovation, and facilities management tasks. A set of protocols will allow us to manage this process at an unprecedented level of intricacy, required to adapt to an economy in transition from a foundation in resource abundance to a foundation in resource management, with its attendant increase in complexities.

A product development division will bring to market products for resource management: tools for urban forest product extraction and processing, tools for urban habitat retrofitting, tools for waste processing, furnishings, and other goods.

A general forestry division will apply these techniques in the intra-urban forest.

An education division will produce urban forestry media and develop a network of expert urban forestry practioners.
